| by Meredith Shamburger (The Daily Sleepy Hollow) A basement fire on North Broadway displaced one family and caused about $20,000 in damage Monday night, according to Sleepy Hollow Fire Chief John Korzelius. Firefighters responded to a fire at 255 North Broadway around 9 p.m. and found the entire building had filled with smoke, Korzelius said. Once police evacuated the apartment building, firefighters discovered an electrical fire in one room in the basement, Korzelius said. "They were able to get to it really quickly," Korzelius said, noting that firefighters feared that the home's age would cause the fire to spread. Korzelius said the basement room suffered some water damage from the firefighting activities. Other rooms had minor smoke damage. All but one family was allowed to return to the building the same night. The family living in the basement has taken refuge with family, Korzelius said. ***Picture courtesy of Cheryl Cabellero*** |
