Westchester County Executive George Latimer has announced a new initiative designed to help recruit and retain volunteers for local Fire Departments and EMS agencies. The County’s new program offers higher education tuition reimbursement and student loan repayment assistance. The Westchester Volunteer Higher Education Recruitment and Retention Opportunity (HERRO) program will provide active volunteer emergency services personnel with tuition reimbursement or student loan repayment assistance. Many of our communities depend on dedicated volunteers to answer the call when fires break out or medical emergencies occur. We hope that this incentive program will encourage more people to serve as local heroes in their communities. We ask that you help us promote the program by making potential beneficiaries aware of these opportunities. Fire and EMS Volunteers are eligible for up to $6,000 annually in tuition reimbursement or student loan repayment assistance. To be eligible, a HERRO applicant must be an active member of a volunteer fire department, fire company, fire district or EMS agency for one year. Volunteers must maintain acceptable volunteer activity and training levels as set forth by the County and confirmed by their local department. An applicant’s department or agency will have to verify that these training and service requirements have been met. There are no restrictions as to the type of academic or trade program coursework the volunteer chooses to pursue. Thank you for helping Westchester County DES and your communities recruit and retain volunteers for local Fire and EMS service. Susan Spear |
